Thol Lake Sanctuary, situated near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts. Spanning 7 square kilometers, this sanctuary features Thol Lake, marshlands, and scrub forests, making it an ideal habitat for over 160 bird species.
The sanctuary shines during the winter months from November to February, when migratory birds arrive in large numbers, creating a spectacular display. Notable among the sanctuary’s residents are several endangered species, including the Sarus crane, flamingos, and pelicans.
Initially constructed in 1912 by the Gaekwad regime as an irrigation tank for local farmers, Thol Lake has long held water rights. Today, it is jointly managed by the Forest and Irrigation departments of the Government of Gujarat. In 1988, Thol Lake was officially designated as a bird sanctuary due to its critical role in avian conservation.
