About the Sanctuary

Nestled in the heart of Dahod district in Central Gujarat, the Ratanmahals Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts, offering a unique hill-station feel. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in March 1982, it straddles the border of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, providing an expansive habitat for the sloth bear, the sanctuary’s star attraction. With the highest sloth bear population in Gujarat, Ratanmahals presents an unparalleled opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

A Sanctuary of Diverse Wildlife

The sanctuary is not just a haven for sloth bears but also boasts a significant population of leopards, making it a prime destination for those interested in big cat sightings. The area is rich in biodiversity, with a variety of habitats that support a wide range of flora and fauna. The forests here are a mix of dry teak forests at the foothills and mixed deciduous forests with dry bamboo brakes on the periphery. The rugged topography and pristine beauty of the forests make it an ideal destination for nature lovers.

The Forest Types and Ecological Significance

Ratanmahals is characterized by a diverse range of forest types, each contributing to the sanctuary’s unique ecosystem:

  • Dry Teak Forests: These forests are predominantly found at the foothills and in the periphery of the protected area. They provide a dense tree cover, creating a perfect environment for the wildlife that thrives here.
  • Mixed Deciduous Forests: This forest type is interspersed with dry bamboo brakes, offering a rich habitat for a variety of species.
  • Timru and Sadad Forests: Pure patches of these forests are found on the plateaus of the hills and at the foothills. They provide a distinct ecological niche within the sanctuary.
  • Mahudo Trees: The high concentration of Mahudo trees, intermixed with pure patches of Sadad and Timru forests, provides a favorite food source for sloth bears. These trees, along with the abundance of Jamun trees, offer sustenance to the wildlife during the monsoon season.

The forests of Ratanmahals play a crucial role in the ecology of the region. They form the catchment area of the Panam River, a major river of Central Gujarat that drains through the districts of Dahod and Panchmahals. An irrigation dam and reservoir have been built on this river near Godhra, highlighting the forests’ significance for water conservation and the overall health of the river ecosystem.
