About the Location:
Khijadia Bird Sanctuary, nestled near Jamnagar, Gujarat, is a sought-after haven for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Spanning 605 hectares of marshlands and mangroves, this tranquil and picturesque sanctuary provides a vital refuge for both migratory and resident birds.
Home to over 220 bird species, including pelicans, flamingos, spoonbills, ducks, egrets, and herons, Khijadia offers visitors a peaceful experience. Originally, a check dam was built to capture the waters of the Ruparel River before it reached the sea. This dam, which gathered both fresh rainwater and saltwater, created a unique and vibrant landscape. In 1981, this exceptional area was designated as a sanctuary.
On February 2, 2022, Khijadia Bird Sanctuary was honored as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. This global agreement promotes the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
For the best experience, plan your visit between November and February, when the sanctuary is alive with migratory birds. Khijadia Bird Sanctuary is a must-see for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
