Baba Pyare Caves

Overview

About the Location:

The Baba Pyara Caves, located near Modhimath, consist of two distinct groups. The northern group features four caves, while the southern group includes a unified plan with a spacious court and a chaitya hall. Influenced by the art tradition of the Satavahanas period, these caves showcase intricate carvings on the pillars and door jambs. Dating back to the 1st-2nd century AD, the caves are cut into a rock face 45 meters (150 feet) high and comprise 13 rooms spread across three stories. They are adorned with Buddhist symbology and are notably better preserved than the Khapara Kodia Caves. The most recent of these caves, approximately 1900 years old, is situated next to the Adi-Kadi Vav.
