Adi-Kadi Vav

Overview

About the Location:
Hidden within Uparkot fort, these two stepwells are extraordinary and unlike any others in Gujarat. Unlike typical wells, which are constructed by digging through layers of soil and rock, these stepwells were intricately carved directly out of solid stone. The entire structure—columns, walls, and all—was hewn from the rock itself, requiring no additional construction. This unique method gives these stepwells a singular architectural identity.

Adi-kadi Vav, created in the 15th century, is a remarkable example of this craftsmanship. It features a steep descent of 120 steps cut into the rock, leading to the well shaft deep within. The origin of the well’s name is surrounded by folklore. One legend suggests that after digging into the hard rock yielded no water, a royal priest decreed that two unmarried girls needed to be sacrificed to find water. Adi and Kadi were the unfortunate chosen ones, and after their sacrifice, water was discovered. A more plausible tale claims that Adi and Kadi were simply the names of royal servant girls who drew water from the well daily. Today, people still honor their memory by hanging clothes and bangles on a nearby tree.
