Jhulta Minara Sidi Bashir Mosque

Overview

About the Location:

The Shaking Minarets, renowned for their mysterious vibrations, continue to baffle architects and design engineers with their enigmatic behavior. When one minaret is shaken, the other begins to vibrate, yet the connecting passage between the two remains unaffected by this motion. The cause of this phenomenon remains unresolved.

There are two prominent pairs of Shaking Minarets in Ahmedabad. One pair is situated near Sarangpur Darwaja, within the Sidi Bashir Mosque complex, which was constructed in 1452 AD by Sidi Bashir, a slave of Sultan Ahmed Shah. These minarets rise three stories high and were once accessible via carved balconies.

The other pair, located near the Kalupur Railway Station, are taller but unfortunately in poor condition. It is believed that the British dismantled these minarets in an attempt to understand the vibrations, but despite their efforts, they could not resolve the engineering mystery and were unable to restore the minarets to their original state. Consequently, demonstrations of the minarets’ shaking or vibrating are no longer conducted.
